No Americans have reached the quarterfinals of the French Open singles for the first time since 2017, after Italy's Matteo Arnaldi defeated Frances Tiafoe in a grueling five-set match in the Round of 16 — 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 — in a match that lasted five hours and 25 minutes.
That result, paired with Madison Keys losing her fourth-round match Monday, eliminated all American contenders. Even more frustrating for the American contingent: They had the highest representation ever at the Grand Slam event, with 17 players combined fo rthe men's and women's singles draw.
As with the women's draw, the men's draw will also have a first-time champion after Monday's action.
My take: Tiafoe played his third straight five-setter and was clearly gassed, but no excuses. He was up 5-4 in the fourth set, serving for the match up 30-love, then blew the game and the tiebreaker. He had trouble on break points and set points throughout Monday's match.
