The NCAA's football oversight committee has approved a proposal that would allow teams with 5-7 records but strong academic performance to be eligible to fill vacant bowl slots after all bowl-eligible teams are considered. The threshold for academic inclusion is a minimum 930 multiyear Academic Progress Rate. The proposal is expected to pass the Division I Cabinet vote in June and be effective for the upcoming season.
Previously, 5-7 teams were only considered on the basis of highest APR to lowest. This broadens the field and allows the bowls to regional replacements to find interested schools and control costs.
My take: This happens so infrequently, it has hardly come into play, but more 6-6 teams are balking on bowl bids each year, with poor payouts. Frankly, I wish they'd get rid of half these ridiculous games to begin with, the bowl version of a participation trophy.
