The NHL has suspended Panthers forward A.J. Greer three games for boarding Flames forward Conor Zary during Friday's game, a 4-1 Flames win.
Greer was issued a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit. The Department of Player Safety had a phone hearing Sunday with Greer.
My take: This has been controversial only for DOPS not having an in-person hearing. The maximum that can be imposed on a phone hearing is five games or a $5,000 fine, meaning Greer was never at risk for more than that, despite already having been fined and suspended once each. The video gives Greer no grace, saying he was fully accountable for his actions, yet he doesn't even get the maximum for the phone hearing. Greer doesn't attempt to play the puck. Zary went head-first into the boards in a way that compresses the neck. He's lucky he wasn't paralyzed. Disgusting play.
