National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman said following Tuesday's Board of Governors meeting that the league will conduct a six-month evaluation process to determine whether the city of Austin or Houston is best suited for NHL expansion.
There is already an agreement for financing in place — $3.5 billion — with Dan Friedkin and family, that includes the franchise fee and the funds for a new arena.
Austin currently has the AHL Stars, affiliate of Dallas, and Houston has a professional hockey history, beginning with the Aeros of the World Hockey Association from 1972 to 1978, and the Aeros of the AHL from 1994 to 2013.
My take: The money's in place, so this is a done deal. Just a matter of where.
