Former Braves owner and media mogul Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III has died due to complications from Lewy body dementia. He was 87.
The Braves issued the following statement:
Mr. Turner purchased the Brave in 1976, for $12 million. That same year, he created the "superstation" TBS, which would be the home for Braves television games through 2007.
Mr. Turner created the 24-hour news cycle, debuting CNN on June 1, 1980. He added TNT network to his cable programming portfolio in 1988, subsequently becoming a major sports network that's paired with regular programming.
Mr. Turner was also an accomplished sailor. Nicknamed "Captain Outrageous" for his brash style and often contentious demeanor, he captained and piloted the yacht "Courageous," sweeping Australia off the coast fo Rhode Island to win the America's Cup, four races to none, and is recognized as the last amateur sailor to win the Cup.
My take: He was quite the personality, ad quite an astute businessman. Rest In Peace.
