Broncos linebacker Jonathan Cooper was arrested for the second time in one week, on multiple counts for violating a protection order in place, which denied him any contact with his alleged victim of domestic abuse.
Cooper was arrested Wednesday night after the woman reported what she characterized as multiple harassing text messages and phone calls. Cooper then went to her home and pounded on her door, prompting her to call 911.
Cooper's charges for the original incident on June 4 have been upgraded to include a second-degree felony assault by strangulation, with an enhancing domestic violence count, bringing that total to two when combined with the original charges of third-degree assault and criminal mischief, each a misdemeanor.
Cooper was released from Douglas County Jail on Friday morning on his own recognizance and was placed under a stricter protection order. He was also restricted from traveling outside the State of Colorado without court permission.
The Broncos issued a statement Friday, saying, "We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper's arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter." The NFL issued a brief statement acknowledging it is aware of Cooper's arrest and that his case continues to be under investigation for violation of the league's personal conduct policy.
My take: The Broncos are not happy. Instead of the boiler-plate "we are aware" statement, it was "we are disappointed to hear." Cooper's in a bit of trouble, with his charges being upgraded post-arrest and now a violation of the OOP.
