The Chargers have signed Derwin James to a three-year, $75.6-million contract extension, making him, once again, the highest paid safety by average annual value — $25.2 million — in NFL history. $57.5 million is fully guaranteed. The new deal takes effect in the 2027 season.
James, 29, was entering the final year of his contract, so the Chargers were committed to signing the eight-year veteran who'sx been selectd to four of the last five Pro Bowls. James has 12 career interceptions and 46 passes defensed in 98 career games. Among his 684 career tackles, 40 have been for a loss and 19 have been sacks.
James is now the third player to sign a record-setting deal for his position, joining Texans EDGE Will Anderson and Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
My take: James won't be the last. It;s becoming common for five to six positions get a new record-deal each year.
