In a moment Knicks fans will forever call "The Tip-in," OG Anunoby followed up his inbound pass to get to the rebound of a Jalen Brunson three-point attempt, and tipped it in with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Knicks a 107-106 win over the Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, a game New York trailed by 29 points early in the second half, making it the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. The Knicks lead the series three games to one and will seek to end it Saturday in San Antonio.
The Spurs dominated the Knicks in the first half, making 14 three-pointers and leading by 27 points at the half, 76-49, and had a 20-point lead — 95-75 — with 9:33 remaining in the game. The Knicks had been there before, down 22 points with 7:42 remaining against the Cavaliers, before storming back to take Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals in overtime.
They channeled that experience, going on a 30-9 run over an eight-minute stretch, to take their first lead of the game on a Brunson floater with 1:22 left. Stephon Castle made two free throws to give the Spurs the lead back with 30.3 seconds left.
Brunson led all scorers with 36 points, and combined with Anunoby for 20 of the Knicks' 32 fourth-quarter points — Anunoby finished with 33 points. Center Karl-Anthony Towns had another strong game for New York, posting his third double-double of the series with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with his own double-double — 24 points, 13 rebounds — supported by 21 points from Dylan Harper and three other teammates in double-digit points.
My take: The Spurs did everything right but finish. They had balanced scoring and led for all but 30 seconds of the game. But full marks to the Knicks, who are relentless. Will they be able to deliver the franchise's first championship in 53 years?
Between this series and the Stanley Cup Final, what a thrill for sports fans.
