The margin between the Knicks and Spurs is thin, but New York keeps finding ways to win. In a back-and forth affair late in the game, the Knicks hung on for 105-104 victory at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, going up in the series 2-0 in the NBA Final, now heading to Madison Square Garden for Games 3 and 4.
The teams' two driving forces decided the outcome. With 57.3 seconds left and the Spurs trailing 102-101, Victor Wembanyama converted a layup on which he was fouled by Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns, converting the and-one for a two-point lead — 104-102.
Then it was Jalen Brunson's turn. The Knicks guard scored on a 13-foot, fade-away jumper to know the score with 37.7 seconds remaining.
Wembanayama and Brunson each missed shots the next two times up the court, each from 16 feet, with Wembanyama securing the rebound on Brunson's miss with 11.5 seconds left. Brunson, however, then stole an errant pass from Wembanyama, who fouled him with 9.5 seconds left. Brunson made one of two free throws and Wembanayma missed a wide-open look from 20 feet with 2.0 seconds remaining to end the game.
Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points but could not get the cots to fall late, while Brunson came up clutch despite shooting struggles — 7 of 25 from the field. The Knicks got great bench play from guard Landry Shamet, who scored 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers. Towns had another strong game with a double-double, leading the Knicks with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Game 3 is Monday, 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
My take: That's 13 straight playoff wins for the Knicks. Another terrific game to watch. No way this series is over. We'll see what kind of nerves he Knicks have to pay through as they play their first NBA Final home game in 27 years.
