Eric Staal has officially retired from the National Hockey League. The 18-year veteran signed a one-day contract with Carolina and retired a Hurricane.
Staal is second to Ron Francis in franchise goals (322), assists (453) and is the franchise leader in hat tricks (13). He was a member of the Hurricanes' 2006 Stanley Cup team. His uniform number 12 will be retired this upcoming season at a date yet to be determined.
Staal played with the Hurricanes for parts of 12 seasons, then played for the Rangers, Wild, Sabres, Canadians and Panthers, last playing during their Stanley Cup runner-up finish in 2023.
Staal finishes with 455 goals, 608 assists in 1,365 games. Now the Hall awaits ... or does it? He is 76th all-time in scoring and has no individual hardware beyond an All-Star Game MVP in 2008, just the Cup win in his second season.
