John Tortorella will not be returning to coach the Golden Knights next season after leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final, according to a team statement. Tortorella took over for Bruce Cassidy, who was fired with eight games remaining in the regular season. Tortorella's contract with Vegas expires on June 30.
A statement released by general manager Kelly McCrimmon said, "We thank Torts for the guidance he provided our team since joining the organization in March. When the decision was made to bring Torts to Vegas, we needed an immediate impact to help us at a pivotal point in the season. Torts' experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final. We are grateful for Torts' passion, sincerity, and commitment to our organization, and we wish him and his family the best."
There is nothing specific indicating Tortorella wanted out, or anything specific from the team to indicate they didn't want him back, but reports say Tortorella does want to coach in the NHL this season.
My take: No surprise. Vegas fires a coach with eight games left, hires a coach who takes it to the Stanley Cup Final, then decides not extend him, even though he wants to continue coaching. Par for the course.
