Designed in part to alleviate tensions between managers and umpires, ABS led to the first ejection this season ... old friend Derek Shelton of the Twins, who did not believe Orioles pitcher Ryan Helsley called for an ABS challenge quick enough on a 3-2 pitch in the ninth inning to Josh Bell. The umpire called ball four, but a challenge was granted and it was overturned to a strike. Instead of two-on, one out, it was one on, two out. The Twins lost 8-6.
My take: Helsley clearly taps his cap right after the pitch call. Probably tough to see from the dugout, and he touches his cap again to signal a challenge, the second being too late if it was the first request.
