The fallout from the injunction placed on the NCAA that allows admitted gambler Brendan Sorsby to play quarterback at Texas Tech was swift and virulent.
• The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. • Georgia has done the same, while the SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. • Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
Though Sorsby himself received general support and sympathy over his mental health issues, coaches, athletic directors and administrators throughout FBS railed against the decision, each citing concerns over the integrity of the sport.
My take: Not a single person came out in support — on the record — for Texas Tech, which was excoriated by many Monday for lobbying and filing to have Sorsby reinstated, which the conference ADs and administrators say is just acting in self-interest to win games and not acting in the best interests of college football.
