Australia provided a stark contrast to the United States in its first Group D match, but the overall result was the same, earning a win over Türkiye, 2-0, at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. Australia is now tied atop the table with the U.S., their next opponent, with three points
The Aussies were content to play compacted defense in a 5-4-1 and counter the Turkish attack, and it worked perfectly. They had just eight shot attempts in the match, but four were on frame, with nice goal finishes from the highly skilled Nestory Irankunda in the 27th minute ...

My take: Türkiye just could not break down the Aussie defense. They had 30 shot attempts and Australia's keeper Patrick Beach stopped all eight they got on goal. There were chances, but they could not finish. Now the question is, will Australia deploy the same strategy against the U.S. Friday in Seattle? If so, they will have to remain disciplined. The U.S. was much quicker on the ball than Türkiye and Poch's style with close support and quick, short passes could lead to some better opportunities for the U.S. than Türkiye could manage ... and make them susceptible to aggressive counters. An urgent match, with the winner likely to take Group D.
