Jon Rahm apologized publicly after his first round for hitting a tournament volunteer with a divot. Unhappy with his second shot on the par-4 seventh hole, Rahm took a full swing in anger as he began walking after the shot, with the divot hitting an on-course volunteer. Replay shows the man taking it in stride as Rahm approaches, embarrassed, and chats with him briefly, apologizing:
Rahm said in his post-round press conference that he would need to track the man down "to give him a present" and said what he did was "unexcusable, for something that could be completely avoidable."
Rahm's eventful round included a hole out on the par-4 second hole, en route to a 1-under 69.
My take: Rahm's lucky it hit the volunteer, who took it as well as one can. If that hit or injured a spectator, the PGA would be less forgiving.
