In contrast to the dire situation for LIV Golf in the post below, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has presented the tour's players with a proposal for a two-tiered tour beginning in 2028, according to a report in the Sports Business Journal.
The top tier would increase signature events to 16 (double the current eight), include the Players Championship, three FedEx Cup tournaments and the four majors, for a 24-event schedule. Unlike current signature events, the new ones would have fields as high as 120 (from 70 to 80) and would include a 36-hole cut. Each event would have a minimum $30 million in prize money. Rolapp also wants to add new course hosts in major metropolitan areas to attract sponsors and maximize attendance.
The second tier would "ladder up" to the top-tier events and would have expanded fields of 140.
The change would require player approval.
My take: Smart. Really increases opportunities for golfers trying to keep their cards through the second-tier events, plus chances to increase their OWGR to qualify for the signature events. Expanding to major metropolitan areas is wise for the reasons Rolapp stated.
