Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt issued a formal statement Wednesday, addressing the fallout over the Brendan Sorsby controversy:
My take: Might be one of the most self-serving statements I've ever read. Hocutt essentially says the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. He falsely equates integrity in supporting a student athlete to the integrity of the outcomes of all games in college athletics. That Sorsby's the real victim. The statement about not funding Sorsby's defense is true, but he conveniently left out the university filed supporting statements to the court in the lawsuit and independently petitioned the NCAA for Sorsby's reinstatement.
Sorsby isn't an established member of the student body, he just transferred in on January 4 to collect millions in NIL and be QB1 in Tech's quest to win games and seek a national championship. If this was someone on the tennis team, not a finger would have been lifted.
It's telling, based on what Hocutt said, that he would not hold his own sons accountable or encourage them to be accountable to themselves for violating NCAA rules.
