Serena Williams made an official return to the WTA on Tuesday, winning a women's doubles match at the HSBC Championships at the Queen's Club in London, England, with Canadian partner Victoria Mboko, 7-6 (2), 6-2. It was Williams' first official match since losing in the third round of the 2022 U.S. Open.
Williams, 44, previously announced she would return to play doubles but said she is not conditioned enough at this point to play singles, after there were erroneous reports that she might make a comeback at Wimbledon, where she has seven singles titles.
Williams said her motivation was for her children — two daughters, ages 8 and 2 — to see her play in person.
My take: This should be fun to watch. The fiercest of competitors, I'm curious if she'll develop that itch to try singles again at some point. If there's a female athlete who could take four years off in her forties and come back and beat people, it's Serena.
