Tigers ace Tarik Skubal's quest for a third consecutive Cy Young Award likely ended when the team announced Monday that Skubal will have elbow surgery that will keep him off the mound a minimum two months and up to three months.
Skubal 29, will have "loose bodies" removed form the elbow, plus any additional cleanup necessary. This is no concern over a potential Tommy John repair and the southpaw is expected back before the end of the season, after which he becomes a free agent.
Skubal is 3-2 this season with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, 45 strikeouts and six walks in 43 1/3 innings pitched.
My take: Tough blow for the Tigers, who are tied with the Guardians atop the AL Central at 18-17. Best to Skubal. The sport suffers when its top players are sidelined for extended periods.
