As if FIFA couldn't be any more insufferable, it has just decided to ban fans from bringing their own, clear plastic, reusable water bottles into World Cup venues, previously allowed up to one liter.
In a statement issued after blowback from the announcement, FIFA said the "made the decision to prohibit bottles to prevent risk and injury to players and attendees. Outside bottles are already prohibited at several of these venues for safety considerations, and FIFA is applying this consideration across its tournament stadiums.”
Additionally, it cited that cool-down and hydration stations that will be operating at every venue.
My take: Bull. A fan can throw a $15 bottle of water they buy in the stadium just as easily. This is about selling the $15 bottle of water, as the promise of the "most affordable World Cup ever held" vanishes quicker than the money from an attendee's bank account.
