The NCAA's Football Oversight Committee has recommended that all teams begin their seasons a week earlier in 2027, in what is currently referred to as Week 0. The recommendation comes with a proviso that each school would have two byes — a twelve-game schedule over 14 weeks, still ending the weekend after Thanksgiving.
There was some wording in the recommendation that it could also be about something else: The model provides "flexibility for potential changes to the postseason."
My take: Couched as a physical- and mental-health initiative, this is all about the FBS playoff expansion that keeps getting pursued. A recent recommendation has a 16-team field, but with teams 13-16 playing each other for two spots in the 14-team field, with two teams earning byes into the second round. That would require an extra week, so the expansion will take that extra week and shrink everyone down to 13 weeks again. All about the money.
