One day after No.1 seed Jannik Sinner was ousted from the French Open by an unseeded player in five sets, No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic suffered nearly the exact fate, building a two-set lead, then losing the last three to 19-year-old, 28-seed Joao Fonseca of Brazil, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
Unlike Sinner (6-1, 6-1), Djokovic was not blown out in the last two sets, but cold not muster what was needed in the 91-degree heat to get past the the Brazilian teen half his age.
My take: Djokovic just turned 39. It's been three years since his last Grand Slam win. He hasn't been physically well. He's at the point he's likely to need a little luck in these major events to get that 25th title. Things were breaking his way at Roland Garros, with Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner out of his way. Not this time. Wimbledon's next. Only Roger Federer was better there than him.
