West Virginia's valiant run to the College World Series came to an end Wednesday in the semifinals, losing to North Carolina, 12-7, a Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.
The Mountaineers trailed 12-1 into the bottom of the seventh, but showed one last time what got them to this point, plating five runs on five hits, including a triple by second baseman Gavin Kelly, one of Tuesday's heroes in the win over Troy.
It was WVU's first-ever trip to the eight-team College World Series, entering the postseason as the No. 16 team in the country. The finish with a record of 47-17, a program record for wins in one season.
My take: What a team. They play exciting, fun baseball to watch. Kudos to manager Steve Sabins and his staff. A national program on the rise. That's 92 wins over the last two years. It's always tough to recruit baseball in northern states, but the blueprint is in place for sustained success. They just need to keep adding players.
