The Phillies have fired manager Rob Thompson with the team is off to a 9-19 start, already 10.5 games behind the first-place Braves. Don Mattingly has been named interim manager and will serve the that capacity the remainder of the season. In what many believe is a first, Mattingly will serve under his son, Preston Mattingly, who is the Phillies' general manager.
Thompson, 62, took over as manger during the season in 2022, leading the Phillies to the NL Pennant. He has since won 90 or more games in each season, including first-place finishes in the NL East the last two seasons and making the playoffs every year of his tenure.
My take: Have all the success you like, but when owners spend $300 million on payroll, patience will wear thin and quick. Thompson's a good manager and has proven it over the last four-plus seasons. given time, he likely would have won 90 games agains this year.
