The PGA of America announced Tuesday that president Don Rea Jr. has been relieved of his duties effective immediately, suspended for the remainder of his two-year contract which expires in November.
Though specifics for the suspension were not released, it is reported that it is a result of Rea's mismanagement of October's Ryder Cup at Bethpage (Black Course) in Farmingdale, N.Y., specifically his original dismissal and inaction of vile comments and crowd behavior toward European players and their families. Rea later apologized for his comments and the fan behavior, but only after CEO Derek Sprague made personal apologies to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, who were targets of excessive verbal abuse.
Vice president Nathan Charnes wil serve as acting president through Rea's term.
My take: Uh .... why did this take seven months? He embarrassed the entire organization, exhibiting unsportsmanlike behavior as the event host.
