West Virginia left no doubt it wanted its first-ever berth in the College World Series, bashing Cal Poly, 17-1 to win their Super Regional and head to Omaha.
The Mountaineers smashed five home runs and totaled 19 hits, while starter Maxx Yehl and three relievers held the Mustangs to one run on seven hits, striking out nine.
WVU outscored the Cal Poly, 29-3, taking the series in two games. The Mountaineers will face another surprise team in its first-round game, taking on the Troy Trojans, who swept the Little Rock Trojans in their Super Regional.
That game will be played Friday or Saturday, once the rest of the field of eight is known.
My take: Congratulations to the Mounatineers and their fans. Just a whoopin'. WVU will be taking a lot of confidence into the CWS, as will Troy. Should be a great game.
