Miami (OH) lost its first game of the season in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, jeopardizing its chances of making the NCAA Tournament, despite a 31-1 record.
The Redhawks had several close games this year, including four that went to overtime, but they could not get past UMass, who got a basket with 26 seconds remaining for the lead —¸ the 12th lead change of the game, to go with 10 ties — going on to win, 85-83 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
My take: Playing in a poor-performing conference with one of the worst non-conference schedules in all of Division I, the Redhawks are now at the mercy of the NCAA selection committee, who will have to prefer the overall record over the peripheral numbers that paint an objective picture that it's a team that hasn't proved they belong — strength of schedule 344 out of 365 and facing zero Tier 1 teams this season. #1-1 is impressicve, but they just got eliminated in theri first game of the MAC tournament. A good story ... just not good enough.
