Nelly Korda won the U.S. Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. with an eight-under 276, beating Charley Hull and Gabby Lopez on one stroke.
Korda was tied for the 54-hole lead entering Sunday's final round and was tied with Hull, Lopez, and In Gee Chun for much of the back nine, but she made a nine-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th hole to take a one-shot lead:
She secured the championship with a three-foot par putt on 18, that curled in off the left lip.
This is Korda's fourth major-championship win and second this season, winning the Chevron Championship in April. She needs victories at the British Open and Evian Championship to secure the five-tournament career "Grand Slam."
My take: Korda's a machine. She was patient Sunday, taking her pars. She entered 17 with two birdies and a bogey, each on the front nine, then made the key putt when she needed it. Can't remember anyone lipping-in on the last putt of the 72nd hole, but it fell. Kudos. She fought off a bunch of major championship winners atop the leaderboard, though ironically neither Hull nor Lopez had won a major.
