The Guardians have acquired two-time reigning Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey from the Giants in exchange for the 29th-overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft and southpaw prospect Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson.
Bailey, 26, was the 13th-overall pick in 2020, taken by the Giants out of NC State. He made his major-league debut in 2023, but was the Giants' No.1 catcher the last two seasons and into 2026. He is defense-only, slashing a career .224/.282/.329 over 383 games, with 22 home runs and 154 RBIs.
Wilkinson, 23, was a 10th-round pick of the Guardians in 2023. He was at Double-A Akron before the trade, posting a 1.59 ERA, a 0.918 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched. He made two hitless, scoreless appearances for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, striking out four in 2.2 innings pitched.
My take: I get that the Guardians are all about run prevention, but this guy's a gaping hoie in the lineup — like Pirates catchers. Give up the comp round A pick is fine, but throwing in a rising high-leverage reliever? I don't blame the Giants for dealing him, with a couple promising young catchers in the system and showing well in small sample sizes this season. Both teams get what they want, i suppose — the Giants much more, on balance.
