Former West Virginia All-American JJ Wetherholt has been named to the Cardinals' opening-day roster. The second baseman, selected seventh overall in 2024, is expected to be a regular, batting atop the lineup.
In 138 games over two minor-league seasons, covering all three levels, Wetherholt slashed .304/.418/.487, with 19 home runs, 75 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.
Wehterholt, 23, is currently ranked the fifth-best prospect in all of Major League Baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Baseball America has Wetherholt the third-best prospect in MLB.
My take: This kid can just play. Short, at 5-9, but strong. Plays a good second base and just gets on base. Drives the ball well gap to gap and is a 20-20 home run-steals guy. I'd expect his abilities will translate well to MLB.
