Browns head coach Todd Monken has given Deshaun Watson the nod as the team's starting quarterback following optional workouts, according to beat writer Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Though Watson will begin atop the depth chart, Monken is open to Shedeur Sanders winning the job and will get plenty of reps to make his case. The hope, however, is for Watson to win the job, with Sanders getting an opportunity to learn and improve so he is fully ready to take over in 2027, when Watson is a free agent.
The Browns added offensive weapons in the draft, taking tackle Spencer Fano, selecting receivers K.C. Concepcion and Denzel Boston, and adding later round tight ends Joe Royer and Carsen Ryans.
My take: Watson, 30, has been down so long, it feels like he's been retired a decade. He's played 19 total games since the end of the 2000 season and his performance has been poor, posting a 9-10 record, completing just 61.2 percent of his passes, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt (8.6 with Texans), throwing 19 touchdowns to 12 interceptions, and being sacked 70 times. That's what's preferable to Shedeur. Yikes.
