Men's basketball: Niederhauser drafted, first for program
When Swiss center Yanic Konan Niederhauser was taken by the Clippeers with the 30th and final pick of the first round of the NBA Draft at Barclays Center, a cheer could be heard all the way from Happy Valley. Niederhauser became the first men's player on the Nittany Lions to be selected in the first round of an NBA Draft.
The 7-foot junior played last season with Penn State after two years at Northern Illinois. He averaged 12.9 points and 6.3 rebounds over 29 games for the Nittany Lions last season, leading the Big Ten in blocks per game at 2.3.
Niederhauser was a premier defender last season. Advanced metrics showed him holding opponents he was guarding to a shooting percentage of .385, remarkable for the low post. He tested well at the combine in all facets and was the fastest of all centers in the sprints.
