Any controversy over whether or not Derek Carr had a shoulder injury came to an abrupt end Saturday, when Carr announced that he is retiring from the National Football League.
The Saints released a team statement documenting that Carr experienced discomfort in his throwing shoulder during his ramp-up program in March. After imaging was done it was discovered that Carr "sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff."
Carr, 34, released a statement through the Saints, saying, “Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with [my wife] Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League. For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”
An unfortunate end to a good career. Carr finishes with a 77-92 career record, 41,245 yards passing, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions. One wonders what he might have done on good teams, but nine seasons with the Raiders and two with the rebuilding Saints didn't give him much of a chance.
