Baseball: Wetherholt starring in Cardinals organization
Former West Virginia star J.J. Wetherholt, the seventh overall pick by the Cardinals last year, turned in this gem today for Double-A Springfield of the Texas League:
Wetherholt, 22, is already pushing for a promotion to Triple-A Memphis after 43 games in Springfield. To go with his solid to sparkling defense, he's slashing .305/.423/.461 with four home runs and 21 RBIs, with more walks (29) than strikeouts (26).
He has consistency through his first two levels in the minors — just 72 professional games — with an OBP over .400 in that span, with an .852 OPS. Some thought he could have been a 1-1 in the draft and his performance is proving that wouldn't have been a reach. He could be terrorizing Pirates pitching by the second half of the 2026 season.
