Jonathan Toews has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League after 16 seasons.
Toews, 38, won three Stanley Cups as captain of the Blackhawks, winning the Conn Smythe for the 2010 playoffs. He won a Selke trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward in the 2012-13 season and won the Mark Messier Award for leadership in 2014-15. He was named as one of the NHL's 100 All-Time Greatest Players in 2018.
Toews' career was derailed after contracting COVID in 2020, missing the entire 2020 season. He returned in 2021-22 and played 73 games, but complained often of fatigue, seeing a dramatic decline in production. He took a leave from the Blackhawks after 53 games in the 2023 season, diagnosed with long COVID. He did not play the following season, but returned to the NHL last season with the Jets, scoring 11 goals with 18 assists in 82 games.
Toews finishes with 383 career goals and 529 assists in 1,149 games.
My take: That illness robbed him of some good years. With his production history, he would have scored 500 goals. A terrific player, great leader, great career. The Hall of Fame awaits.
