The Bears have given inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds permission to seek a trade. Edmunds, 27, a former two-time Pro Bowl player for the Bills, has spent the last three seasons in Chicago, registering 335 tackles, nine interceptions and 24 passes defensed in 45 games.
Edmunds is entering the last year of his contract at $17.4 million. He is due a $1 million roster bonus on the March 16, the fifth day of the new league year.
My take: This is my favorite thing, telling a player he can seek a trade when the team is 100 percent going to release him before they have to pay him his roster bonus. What team will take on an $18-million contract when it knows it can negotiate a deal on their own terms on March 16. Either way, the player has control over where he goes; certainly a player of Edmunds caliber, who has the requisite coverage skills for today's NFL — his numbers are better than many slot corners over the last three years.
