Gary Bettman said on Monday that the Penguins' sale from Fenway Sports Group to the Hoffmann family is "a work in progress, but seems to be on track."
The sale agreement for the Hoffmanns to acquire controlling interest in the team was completed in Dec. 19, but is pending league approval and approval from the Board of Governors. Bettman didn't go into details about the specifics for the delay, but it's worth noting that the Board of Governors has typically voted on these things at their meetings, and the most recent Board of Governors meeting was only a few days before the sale agreement was finalized. There isn't another one on the league's calendar for this season.
"These transactions, meaning franchise sales in the major sports, are big deals in every sense of the word," Bettman said. "You have to make sure the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed. But everything seems to be progressing."
Bettman said that there's still work to be done by the board before they can approve the Hoffmanns, but said "from everything we hear, they're very excited and very committed."
