The Penguins trailed two goals with just over three minutes remaining on the clock on Tuesday, a period in which the Hurricanes had largely dominated to that point.
The Hurricanes, still pushing to extend their lead, got a two-on-one between Sebastian Aho and Eric Robinson, only for Stuart Skinner to rob Robinson with a sprawling glove save:
"A quick two-on-one that they're able to have some space," Skinner recalled of that moment after. "They slowed it down, which always makes it harder. Came in pretty close, and he was able to sneak a pass through. Credit to them. And I just did everything I could to get over there and I was able to make a big save."
That save proved to be pretty impactful. Noel Acciari's deflection made it a one-goal game just over a minute later, and Bryan Rust tied it in the final minute to force overtime. While the Hurricanes eventually prevailed 5-4 in the shootout, the Penguins picked up a crucial point in the standings -- one that wouldn't have been possible without that save from Skinner, one of a number of times he did his part to keep the game within reach. He finished the night with 39 saves.
"He was huge," Dan Muse said of Skinner. "The save at the end was huge. That made a massive difference in us getting a point here tonight."
Rickard Rakell credited that save with giving the team hope, and Ryan Shea estimated that without Skinner playing the way he did, they would have lost by three goals.
Skinner ultimately blamed himself for the shootout loss in the end, having stopped just one of three shooters. But overall, he said he "felt really good about my game."
"I'm super stoked that we were able to get a point out of these guys in their building," he said. "It's hard to do."
