The Penguins are relaunching their Hall of Fame after a 12-year hiatus.
Six players -- Tom Barrasso, Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr, Chris Kunitz, Larry Murphy and Kevin Stevens -- and four builders – Scotty Bowman, Eddie Johnston, Jim Rutherford and Ray Shero -- will be among those that comprise the next three team Hall of Fame classes. Four or five members will be in each class over the next three years, with additional members to be added to those above.
The four members that will be inducted into the Penguins' Hall of Fame class will be announced at a later date. The on-ice ceremony will take place on Oct. 25 prior to the Penguins' game against the Blue Jackets.
A physical Hall of Fame space to honor the new and previous inductees will be constructed on the main concourse of PPG Paints Arena.
PENGUINS
The inductees were chosen by a 21-member selection committee that includes media, team personnel and former players, coaches, general managers and broadcasters. Kyle Dubas delivered the news to the inductees with a phone call, including a call to the late Ray Shero's sons Kyle and Chris.
“The Penguins are one of the most storied franchises in the history of National Hockey League," Dubas said in a statement. "Permanently celebrating the success of our past players and personnel has been an important mission of our current staff all across the organization. The three-year plan is an effort to recognize those whose contributions laid the foundation for the championship standard here in Pittsburgh. It was a great honor, in my current role as the person tasked with helping to lead the Penguins back to Stanley Cup contention, to call the inductees and we look forward to unveiling the Hall of Fame display and celebrating with our players, fans and people of Pittsburgh."
The Penguins' Hall of Fame started in 1992 and had nine classes, with the last class being inducted in 2013. The 20 members already in the team's Hall of Fame are below:
