Elmer Soderblom said that his first reaction to his trade from Detroit to Pittsburgh ahead of the trade deadline on Friday was one of "shock, but that quickly turned into something different.
"I'm really, really excited to be here," Soderblom said after the Penguins' 5-4 overtime win over the Bruins on Sunday. "It was really fun to play today and get things going here in Pittsburgh. So I'm just looking forward to playing more."
Soderblom went from a healthy scratch in his last three games with Detroit to a third-line winger in his Penguins debut on Sunday, skating on the left side of a line centered by Ben Kindel and opposite Avery Hayes. He skated in 10:21, including 1:07 with the second power-play unit, and recorded three shots on goal on five attempts, two hits, and won the only faceoff he took. He often parked his big 6-foot-8 frame in front of Joona Korpisalo to provide a screen or look for redirects.
"I'm a big forward who plays with my size," he told me of his game. "I have a long reach, so I like to use my size to my advantage. Play around the net, use the body, play physical, get to the net, use my hands and shot in tight as well."
Soderblom didn't have the chance for a practice or a morning skate before his Penguins debut, and just had some conversations with the Penguins' coaching staff about the new system. He's still learning the new system, and so he said he just focused on "playing my game" in the win.
"I didn't think too much, and just played," he said.
