Sam Girard remembers gravitating toward watching Kris Letang when he was younger, something that came natural to him since they're both French Canadian. And so after Girard was traded to the Penguins on Tuesday, he called it "special" to be paired with Letang to start.
Dan Muse called the pairing a "good place to start," and noted that they'll still have some conversations when it comes to what they do in tomorrow's game. But he thinks that Girard and Letang could potentially complement each other, and Letang thinks so, too. Letang said that he's watched Girard in Colorado for a number of years, and praised his skating, vision, and defensive play with his stick. It's not entirely unlike what Letang had gotten used to with Brett Kulak.
"It worked really well with Brett," Letang said. "And Brett was not an overly physical defenseman. He was a smart defenseman with a really good stick, good first pass, good skater. So it kind of fits what Sam brings. So we'll see. I mean, like everything else, the chemistry needs to get built. It's not happening overnight."
