Ben Kindel entered Sunday's finale to the western road trip in Vancouver in a scoring slump.
Kindel went 19 games without a goal, recording only six assists in that span. He hadn't found the back of the net since Dec. 14, when he had a goal and two assists in an overtime loss to Utah.
Kindel couldn't have picked a better time to break out of the slump. Playing about a 40-minute drive from his hometown of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Kindel had around 150 friends and family in attendance for the game, with those closest to him in a suite of their own at one end of the ice. Kindel scored not one, but two goals in front of that suite in the Penguins' 3-2 win over the Canucks.
Kindel's first goal of the night was a redirect of a Ryan Shea shot-pass:
His second was a one-timer off a feed from Justin Brazeau:
"It was nice to score and get the win and cap off a great road trip," Kindel said.
Kindel's drought wasn't from a lack of effort. He had 24 shots on goal during his 19-game drought, including some pretty close calls. Because he was still getting those chances, his confidence didn't necessarily take a dip.
"You want to try and help the team as much as you can, and scoring is one of those areas that you can help the team win," he said. "I don't know (ending the drought) is as much about confidence, but just keep playing my game. The goals will come."
Kindel spent a long time after the game meeting with everyone who came out to see him, finally going back to the locker room to cheers of "We love you, Ben!" from those who stuck around.
