Kyle Dubas will speak at noon today following the news of Mike Sullivan’s departure. I’ll have quick takes below.
Some quick takeaways:
• They hope to have a coach hired by early June.
• They're willing to hire internally. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach Kirk MacDonald will not be considered for the job because he's only been around for a year.
• Dubas said he met with Sullivan on Tuesday for a chat. He had been considering a change for some time, even during the season. He went to Boston yesterday to give Sullivan the news and Sullivan didn't disagree with the decision.
• Dubas gave Sidney Crosby a heads up before meeting with Sullivan yesterday that Sullivan wouldn't be back. Dubas was asked if he has any concern Crosby would want to leave now and Dubas gave a direct "No."
• There was a "report" out there today from one of the radio people who isn't actually ever around the team that what happened was Sullivan came in with a list of "non-negotiable" demands and Dubas and Fenway told him that wasn't happening and that was the dealbreaker. Dubas shut that down, seemed mildly amused by it, said that never happened, Sullivan never had any demands.
• Mike Vellucci, Ty Hennes and Andy Chiodo are on expiring contracts and Dubas is giving them the clearance to look elsewhere, but they're also free to stick around and talk after a coach is hired if they want. They want to give the new coach an opportunity for a clean slate though.
• I asked if they're prioritizing a coach with "recent" development experience, like from the minors or junior, given the stage the franchise is in. Dubas said that development experience will be a priority but it just has to be any experience.
• They're going to be casting a "wide net" -- long-term NHL coaches, college, junior, Europe. He said they'll be starting virtual interviews soon as the first phase, but noted that some of their top candidates are still actively in the AHL/NHL playoffs.
