Sidney Crosby had a power-play goal and an assist on Bryan Rust's own power-play goal in the Penguins' 6-5 overtime loss to the Sharks, bringing him to 1,721 career points -- now just three away from surpassing Mario Lemieux for the most all-time in franchise history.
Crosby's goal came off a rebound in the first period:

The Penguins have a pair of games left in this homestand -- tomorrow vs. the Mammoth and Tuesday against the Oilers -- before heading north of the border to go on the road again. It's absolutely likely Crosby could tie or set the record on home ice, and some important people are in town to witness it. Crosby's family got into town this week, and Lemieux himself was in attendance for Saturday's game in a suite with his own family.
Crosby's goal was his 19th of the season. He currently has 17 seasons of 20+ goals, tied with Wayne Gretzky, Marcel Dionne, Mats Sundin, Mike Gartner, Brett Hill, Patrick Kane, Jarome Iginla, Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne and Mark Messier for the seventh-most such seasons in NHL history. His next goal will give him his 18th 20-goal season, and sole possession of seventh place on the list. And if he can put together another 20-goal season next year, he'd tie Brendan Shanahan, Dave Andreychuk and Jaromir Jagr for fourth-all-time.
Crosby's hit a lot of cool milestones in recent years, and surpassing some of those names on the 20-goal season list will be another one of them. But no milestone will be greater than overtaking Lemieux for the franchise's scoring record.
