There's less than a week until the Stanley Cup playoffs, every team in the East has only two games to play, and there are still four possible opponents for the Penguins in the first round: Flyers (94 points), Blue Jackets (92), Capitals (91) and Islanders (91).

Crazier still, only one of those will make the playoffs at all.

Observations within that: Kiss the Islanders goodbye. They just couldn't afford that loss today. ... The number to watch with the Flyers is their regulation wins, 26, the lowest of these four survivors. They hold the spot right now, but they lose every tie. ... The Flyers finish with back-to-back home games Monday and Tuesday against the Hurricanes and Canadiens, which sounds daunting, but neither of those teams should be anywhere near as urgent. ... The Blue Jackets also finish with two at home, tonight against the Bruins and Tuesday against the Capitals.

The Penguins had the opportunity to play spoiler -- or at least help play spoiler -- to the Capitals here at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday.

Had the Capitals lost in regulation, a Flyers win over the Jets on Saturday evening would have been enough to eliminate the Capitals from playoff contention. But a shorthanded Penguins lineup, with seven of their better players sitting out with bumps and bruises ahead of the playoffs, fell 6-3 in a lopsided loss.

The Penguins' intention in holding out Sidney Crosby, Ben Kindel, Evgeni Malkin, Bryan Rust, Parker Wotherspoon, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang was two-fold. "Rest" wouldn't be an entirely accurate word -- they are genuinely banged up, and so sitting out for a game (or more) gives them more time to get closer to 100% for the playoffs. But at the same time, the Penguins know that if they make a run, they won't do it with the same lineup the whole way. Players will get injured. And so as the playoffs near, it benefits them to have Rutger McGroarty, Ville Koivunen, Joona Koppanen, Kevin Hayes, Jack St. Ivany, Ilya Solovyov and Ryan Graves get some minutes during this opportunity.

"If you go two, three, four rounds, you're gonna need a lot of bodies," Connor Clifton said. That's how it always is. Guys go down. Some guys have been sitting out months, they've been in Wilkes, whatever it is. I think it's about getting game reps up here and building that. Obviously, we wish we were a little better tonight. But we got a lot to watch."

The Capitals, playing for their lives, outplayed the hodgepodge Penguins lineup of regulars, recalls and recent healthy scratches. The Penguins were outshot, 31-12. The Capitals had clear shots at high-danger opportunities because the Penguins defense corps of primarily brand-new pairings struggled to protect the net-front. Anthony Mantha beat Logan Thompson first with a shot that went in off of a Capitals defenseman early in the second period. Noel Acciari scored off a rebound midway through the same frame. Then toward the end of the second, Arturs Silovs robbed Alex Ovechkin's one-timer on the power play, setting the stage for Kevin Hayes to score on a breakaway out of the penalty box.

But giving the Capitals too many clear looks at the net was too much to overcome, and Alex Ovechkin capped off the win with an empty-netter that put a rally out of reach.

"They've got a good team over there," Shea said. "I think anytime you put this jersey on, you've got to play with pride. And I think we do. I think we competed hard. Guys had stepped in after being out for a while, I think everyone did a great job, and the compete was there. Execution was off. But that's going to happen."

As a result, the Capitals are still alive as a potential first-round opponent -- and that makes Sunday's game in Washington that much more important.

The Penguins aren't totally at the point yet where they're glued to the standings and out-of-town scores, learning all the scenarios for their potential first-round matchups. Mantha, admittedly, didn't even fully know the stakes for the Capitals in this game, or tomorrow's game. But he knows that beating this team tomorrow is important.

"Tomorrow's a new day," he said. "We're going to win, fly out there, and do that tomorrow."

"It's a quick turnaround," Dan Muse said. "It's going to be important for us to regroup, be able to look at some things that we can do better."

Through a second-period TV timeout, the Penguins played a video tribute to Alexander Ovechkin since it could be his last game in Pittsburgh, as he's 40 years old and has said he'll make a decision about whether or not he'll continue playing this summer.

Ovechkin on the ovation: "It was nice. It was a show of respect. All the time we spend on rivalries, playoffs, regular season, it shows respect."

Later, Ovechkin said on this future: "I don't know if it's going to be my last year or not ... I didn't say that, so we'll see."

Anthony Mantha described Ovechkin as being fun to be around, always laughing. He also said of the ovation: "Honestly, I was surprised to see that video come up. He hasn't announced anything yet, as we know, but it's awesome. The hockey community, I think, as a whole, is good. And fans here in Pittsburgh are great."

The moment didn't escape the Capitals' coach, Spencer Carbery: "That was cool. And I was like that wasn't your ... you know, sometimes they do those now when guys come back to places and that was an ovation that you could tell the respect and it went on for a bit and you're sitting there and you're clapping and you're like, yes, you could feel in that moment what Ovi has meant to the Pittsburgh Penguins' fans and this city, and the appreciation for the rivalry. Even though they hate the Washington Capitals, they appreciate what's going on over the last 21 seasons of going back and forth and being able to watch this live and tell your kids about it and grow up in this era where it's Ovie versus Crosby, Penguins versus Capitals, you can tell there's a genuine appreciation from the city."

Even Pittsburgh fan favorite Tom Wilson had good things to say about the ovation: "There have been so many great battles here that they’ve been a part of. Obviously, Sid and Ovi, two legends. We try to leave it all out there as hockey players, whether it’s your home crowd or away crowd. It’s what makes hockey great. It’s the blood, sweat and tears, always had a ton of that in this building. I think it’s awesome to see the Pittsburgh crowd give him that respect. Hopefully, he keeps playing. But if not, it’s been a heck of a front-row seat, from my perspective."

Kevin Hayes, playing in just his 26th game of the season, his first since March 3 on the road in Boston and fifth since the Christmas holiday break, scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway after coming out of the penalty box.

Hayes exited the box, and as he received the puck from Ryan Shea, the crowd sensed an opportunity and began to cheer. Hayes, who isn't the fleeted of skaters, had just enough room to skate in and fire a shot by Logan Thompson:

"Yeah, it's always fun to score," said Hayes. "No matter what level, little kids, NHL players."

It hasn't been an easy season for Hayes, who was injured just minutes into training camp, but he's been a leader for the team.

"He's a huge part of our room," said Connor Clifton. "Obviously, he hasn't been in, for him to get in and get that big goal. That's a big goal at that time... he shows up every day. He's a true professional. That's why you don't accidentally play 800 games in this league."
