The Penguins on Tuesday traded Valtteri Puustinen and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Avalanche in exchange for left-handed defenseman Ilya Solovyov.
Solovyov, 25, has played 16 games in the NHL this season with Colorado, scoring one goal and one assist. He was scoreless in three games with the AHL's Colorado Eagles. He is in the second year of a two-year deal that carries a $775,000 cap hit and is set to be a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this summer, a designation based on his lack of NHL games, only 31 over three seasons.
A source with Colorado’s organization tells me that Solovyov “plays hard, one of those D that you just don’t want to play against. His feet are his weakness but he makes up for it with a good stick. He has a bomb of a slap shot.”
Solovyov will be joining the Penguins on their western road trip, though it's not yet clear when he'll be available to play.
