Kyle Dubas said on Wednesday that he'd like to add at forward -- preferably a younger, mid-20s player with some term left on their contract ... and he did just that on deadline day.
The Penguins acquired winger Elmer Soderblom from the Red Wings for a 2026 third-round pick. The pick was the one that originally belonged to the Sharks and was acquired by the Penguins in the Erik Karlsson deal.
Soderblom, 24, is 6 foot 8 and 252 pounds. He's signed through next season with a $1.125M cap hit. He's skated in 39 games with Detroit this year, recording two goals and one assist. He split last season between the NHL and AHL, picking up 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 26 NHL games, and 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) in 38 AHL games.
Soderblom has been a healthy scratch as of late for Detroit, sitting the last three games. He's in the middle of a 16-game pointless streak.
While he's big, Soderblom isn't overly physical, averaging 1.64 hits per game. He has one total career fight at any level.
Kyle Dubas said that Soderblom fits a "prototype" that they really didn't have in their system before this.
"He's a very tall human being," Dubas said. "I think the things that have stood out throughout this year have been just his ability get in on the forecheck, disrupt pucks, win pucks back. And I think for us, that's one thing that we'd identified is, we've obviously got the line of Dewar, Lizotte and Acciari that do a really good job of that. But being able to have a little bit more of that throughout the lineup would be good."
It's not clear where Soderblom fits with the Penguins, but it'll definitely be somewhere in the NHL -- he's not eligible to be sent down to the AHL at this point in the season anymore.
