Wilkes-Barre/Scranton recalled defenseman Brent Johnson from Wheeling and signed defenseman Quinn Beauchesne to an amateur tryout agreement, a contract that allows players coming from junior to play in actual games.
Wilkes-Barre is without regular defensemen Alex Alexeyev, Finn Harding, Sebastian Aho and Phil Kemp due to injury. They had previously recalled defensemen David Breazeale and Emil Pieniniemi from Wheeling.
Johnson, 23, is a first-year pro out of Ohio State. He played one AHL game with Wilkes-Barre this season, and was otherwise in Wheeling, where he recorded 12 goals and 43 assists in 72 games, tying for the team lead in scoring.
Beauchesne, 19, was the Penguins' fifth-round pick last summer out of the OHL's Guelph Storm, where he scored seven goals and 28 assists in 56 games. He was signed to an amateur tryout contract after the Storm's season ended and got into one AHL game, but was released from his ATO once the playoffs started and it seemed clear that he wouldn't be needed with the Penguins' defensive depth. He's committed to Boston College for next season.
