The Penguins were on their way to getting "goalied" by the Devils' Jacob Markstrom through two periods on Thursday, with Tommy Novak's first-period deflection being the only shot to solve Markstrom in a 1-1 tie. That was until Connor Clifton's heads-up play broke the tie and propelled the Penguins to a 4-1 win.
Ryan Shea ripped a shot off the crossbar, and the shot ricocheted out to Markstrom's left. Markstrom and the Devils in front of him lost sight of the puck for just a moment as the puck popped out to Clifton, who ripped a slap shot past Markstrom.
Then 50 seconds later, Evgeni Malkin sprung Egor Chinakhov on a partial breakaway, and Chinakhov popped a shot over Markstrom's pads. Blake Lizotte added a shorthanded empty net goal late.
