Penguins forward prospect Melvin Fernstrom was named the Swedish Hockey League's Rookie of the Year on Sunday.
Fernstrom, 19, had 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 48 games with his club Orebro, with 11 of the points coming in the final 19 games. The award is voted on by a panel including all of the SHL's head coaches and team captains, as well as a selection of national and local SHL writers.
Fernstrom, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound winger, was originally a 2024 third-round pick of the Canucks. He was acquired by the Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson/Drew O'Connor trade midseason. He remains unsigned by the Penguins, though they retain his rights until June 2028. He made the trip to Pittsburgh after his team's elimination from the SHL playoffs and skated at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for some time on his own.
Fernstrom is the second Penguins prospect to win an SHL award this season after Filip Hallander previously won Forward of the Year.
